You Do You
To The Right, Turn Around
To The Right, Turn Around is a 3.5-minute film stemming from Barronian's lifelong obsession with celebrity and red carpet events. It is an exploration of the bizarre social atmosphere of that world —an uncomfortable and forceful voyeurism that accompanies any red carpet. Payton Barronian teamed up with You Do You to create a fantasy world of diverse and beautiful "celebrities" that doesn't conform to heteronormative standards of beauty while celebrating what some may consider "flaws."
Artist / Director
Payton Barronian’s video art and design work queers the standard slickness of commercial graphic design and fashion video. Rejecting the maxim that minimalism is a must, their designs are densely populated with an overabundance of replicated texts and textures, often to the point of bordering illegibility. The resulting cacophony of information mimics and accelerates the noise pollution of modern advertising. While often appearing chopped and dirty, their designs remain sensuously alluring. Perhaps in kinship with the dissonant yet rich effect of diversity in their home of New York City, the richly layered fields of text and image become textural, a beautifully enmeshed field of content that moves fluidly between claiming it’s unique singularity and being lost in the crowd.
